Majid Keyhani, president of Athletics Federation of I.R. Iran elaborated salient points on the verge of 18th Asian Games Jakarta 2018, in a press conference held on Monday 7th August 2018.

Tehran, Iran – As Athletics Federation of I.R. Iran reports, Majid Keyhani, president of Athletics Federation of I.R. Iran opened up to the journalists and reporters in a press conference held on Monday about some important issues on the 18th Asian Games Jakarta 2018.

“The Athletics Federation of I.R. Iran and all the involved members made every endeavor throughout recent months for Asian Games and I hope the efforts will led to success in 18th Asian Games Jakarta 2018. Fortunately we acted out the plans we organized last year and reached good results. We analyzed the champions’ plans and programs in Asia and World competitions, so we observed stunning performances of our National Team in recent tournaments. The members of the national team were strong in their resolve and proved their right status in Asia and world. Truth the matter is that, the results our athletes achieved in the last year made our job easier in national team organization and also gave us the opportunity for better planning on selecting different athletes instead of trial and error.” Keyhani said.

He also added that the national team squad has been partially selected since the past October, but on Monday federation deduced from the performances to select the final team squad. “We had two options in selecting our team squad for Asian Games, either to focus on the athletes who have got the chance for the Asian Games or selecting the athletes according to the quota. We didn’t chose the second option since as it was done before we did not get the gratifying result; therefore, we decided to focus on the athletes who have got the less chance for Asian Games which apparently this decision eventuated in loads of objections.” He emphasized.

“As our preparation plans for Asian Games Jakarta demanded, we deployed seven or eight coaches and in other events some Iranian coaches like Mr. Sajad Moradi and others assisted, so we could pass the season under the auspices of them. As anybody knows, we provided maximum training competitions for the team to get well-prepared and finally we clinched 16 quota in a consultation with the authorities.” Keyhani said.

President of Athletics of I.R. Iran congratulated on the selected athletes to be sent to Asian Games Jakarta 2018. “I congratulate 12 selected athletes and I ask all of them to strive and fight with all their heart and soul to achieve honorable results for Iran and make all of us proud. It should also be noted that some of our athletes did their best to be a part of the team squad but unfortunately it didn’t happen, I have to tell them that Athletics has not come to an end for them and sincerely ask them to give their best shot for the next tournaments ahead of us.” He stressed.

“Sepideh Tavakoli 5th in Asia ranking, Elham Kakoli 17th, Sajedeh Fani 21st, Farzaneh Fasihi 22nd and Reyhane Aranau 18th in Asia ranking, are the five athletes who have the most chance to participate in Asian Games Jakarta 2018 and we chose out of those who has got more chance to win medals. Our goal set to Elham Kakoli is to reach 200m final in Asian Games, obviously if it happens it will be a great achievement for the Federation and Iran. We didn’t discriminate against women athletes, we did not select the national team squad by the gender cleavage, but we did it by achievements and performances.” He emphasized.

Keyhani responded to the last question on tardy announcement of the team squad for Asian Games: “we selected 20 athletes at first, but the more we went forward, the more we analyzed and finally we reckoned to select the whole team first and announcing the squad later. I assure you that we did whatever it took for team’s success in Asian Games Jakarta. We backed up everyone who needed support and endorsement, we analyzed everyone without exception and we hope to be better than winning three medals that we promised.” He added in the end.
